Mike is a founding member of the Society for Diagonal Performance Horn, a school of horn playing extolling the exceptional tone and exquisite nature of "leaning" into one's performance. Seen here, Mike is demonstrating an extreme adaptation of the Slightly Off-Kilter Technique pioneered by the group. Notable in this particular performance is that Mike is not actually playing a horn. Now that's technique! And, for Mike, it's all about technique.
Mike is devoted to the SDPH. The group is credited with developing the PH scale of horn performance that ranks players according to degrees of greatness and taste. The scale is often used, but seldom understood. When Mike plays in clubs, it's not uncommon to hear someone in the audience mutter, "That's acid man, really acid." Mike's PH distinguishes him from the typically more base players in the Society. Mike always tries to give his performances that little extra kick of flavor.
